Life introduction
Dhruvdas has a prominent place among the devotee poets of Radhavallabh sect. The complete analysis of the devotional principles of this sect is available in his speech, which is not available in the speech of any other devotee. Despite having a special important place in the sect, there is no definite information about his birth year etc. In his book named Rasanand Leela, he has given its composition period as follows:Samvat sixteen to panchasa, description is Dhruv Jugal Bilasa.
According to scholars, he was born in a Kayastha landlord family. There is a lot of discrepancy regarding his birth date, but if his Rasanand Leela Granth is considered his initial work, then his birth date must be considered at least twenty years before that. On this basis, his birth is confirmed to be around Samvat 1630 [1830]. Similarly, on the basis of the following couplet available in Dhruvdas ji’s book named Rahasyamanjari Leela [1], his death can be estimated to be around Samvat 1700 [1900]:Seventeen sai dwai oon aru agahan pachhi ujiyaar.Doha Chaupai says Dhruv Ikasat above four.
Dhruvdas ji was born in the Kayastha clan of Devband village. His clan already had exclusive worship of the Vaishnava tradition. According to the descendants of Dhruvdas ji, his grandfather was a disciple of Shri Hitharivansh ji. His father Shyamdas was also a great devotee and social worker. Dhruvdas’s writings reveal that like his father, he too took initiation in the Yugal-Mantra from Shri Gopinath ji.Shri Gopinath’s feet hold the stream of great secret nectar in his heart.Binu Vilam has come, wonderful Jugal Vihar.
Due to his innate sanskars, Dhruvdas ji became detached from worldly things in his childhood and came to Vrindavan at a very young age. He was a very humble, modest, devoted to saints, tolerant and serious by nature Mahatma.
Compositions
All his works are Muktak. He named his books Leela. The number of his books or Leelas is forty-two. Apart from this, 103 more of his individual poems are found. These have been given a place in the forty-two Leelas in the name of Padyavali.
